Antique Artist's Figure Model Wood Mannequin Italy
This is an antique artist's wooden figure model or mannequin that was hand carved in Italy and sold to my grandfather O.P. Herbig, a listed artist, by F. Weber and Company, Philadelphia P. A. USA around 1910 which is stamped in purple on the back of the model. My grandfather was married in Pennsylvania in 1911 and then moved to California to work as a painter. The model is 13 inches high and the face painted on the figure model was apparently added for his daughter. There is even a trace of paint on the fingernails and toenails. The model is hand carved with delineated fingers, toes and face with joints. The construction is put together with ball joints and wood pegs instead of nails or other fasteners. The model has great patina. These are 2 small chips. One is on the model's lower back and one is on the inside of an elbow joint. I used the model myself during my classes as an art minor at a California university in the 1960s. One hardly ever sees these. Quite fun, and really a folk art piece in it's own right.
