This carpet ball or carpet bowl is over 100 years old and is of original glazed hard fired clay. The design is an interesting one of white and pink or red plaid. Plaid was a favorite of Queen Victoria. The carpet ball is about 3.5 inches in diameter. It is quite heavy. The condition is very good. It has been used, and has a superficial flaw that looks to have been a manufacturing flaw. There are the usual tiny circle dents where the ball has been hit hard. This is a very different Chelsea or Grandmother's Ware teacup and saucer made by an unidentified pottery in the Staffordshire region of England between 1850-1870s. The victorian pattern is called Blue Sprig or Chelsea Sprig but has been overpainted and then glazed and fired with a copper luster on the sprig decoration. Very unusual. This is an antique 7 inch in diameter ironstone plate made in Staffordshire, England by one of several manufacturers between 1860-1880s in the Chelsea Grape or Grandmother's pattern with molded swags and blue grape sprigs and copper luster. The pattern was actually made until 1968 but the mark dates it to the earlier period.
